I think shoe repair places are comforting because
 
1) It's just old school, you know?
 
2) They're repairing an object that has a problem, and you KNOW what the problem is, as opposed to taking a stereo or computer somewhere to get fixed.  Or a car.  It's simple. YOU know what's wrong and you know exactly what THEY are going to do.
